Marmoleum & Linoleum Floor Cleaning Tips

If you are the owner of a linoleum or marmoleum floor, you know how long-lasting it can be. These flooring options have been around since the 1860s and have actually changed quite a bit in that time. The one thing that hasn’t changed is their ability to last if taken care of properly. Follow these tips and tricks for getting the most bang for your buck out of your linoleum and marmoleum floors.

Keep Your Floors Clean!

The number one way to keep your floors lasting forever is to keep them clean! Maintaining clean floors will minimize scratches and scuffs, which break down the flooring over time and eventually lead to requiring tiles replacement.

The Things you SHOULD do to Keep Linoleum and Marmoleum

These tips can be applied for keeping most hard floors clean because they are a wonderful way to ensure the life of most hard floors.

Keep things clean.

Your floors should be cleaned on a regular schedule to combat the buildup of dust and grime. On top of that, whenever there’s a spill, make sure to mop it up as soon as possible to prevent spots and stains. Remember, it's essential to keep your cleaning tools clean as well. If you are mopping with a dirty mophead, you could be further scratching your floors while you “clean” them.

Prevent dirt from entering your space.

Entrance mats go a long way in the battle to keep your floors looking great. They trap dirt and particles before they even have a chance to hit the hard floors. A mat before and after the threshold will mean double the protection against unwanted dirt and debris. Remember to keep these entrance mats clean on a regular schedule as well, or else they won’t keep dirt and debris out.

Protect your floor by thinking ahead.

If you have linoleum or marmoleum floors, there’s a good chance your spaces are being used a lot. Keep them safe from unwanted abrasion by placing caps or protective sleeves over the feet of furniture that will be moved frequently, like chairs. Also, if you plan to apply finish to your floors, make sure that you rinse and neutralize the floor before applying finish.

The Things you SHOULD NOT do to Keep Linoleum and Marmoleum

Most of the time, as long as you are keeping your hard floors clean, that’s 90% of the battle. Here are some of the things to avoid doing to keep your hard floors lasting a long time.

Don’t mix cleaning chemicals.

Unless the directions on the chemicals explicitly call for mixing, avoid this, as it can be dangerous for you and your linoleum or marmoleum floors.

Don’t apply wax or furniture polish.

Any chemical that’s not explicitly intended for use on your floors should not be applied to your floors.

Don’t apply finish to a floor without cleaning it first.

Applying finish to a dirty floor just seals in the dirt and shortens the life of your floors.

Don’t apply thick coats of finish to your floors.

Always follow the application instructions for any chemical or product you place on your floors.
